MIAMI – March 31, 2022 – The Florida Peninsula Chapter of AUVSI, Inc. (AUVSI Florida), a Miami-based 501(c)6 non-profit organization that serves as a regional chapter of the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), has appointed communications and government relations expert Tom McMahon as the organization’s Government Relations Advisor. McMahon will lead and help shape the government relations strategy for AUVSI Florida and its individual and organizational members across the state.

McMahon, who serves as the managing director of the Washington D.C.-based Aspel Group, is a senior-level communications and government relations professional with a successful track record of leading comprehensive outreach strategy for industry association members, Fortune 500 corporations, emerging technology companies, and public affairs firm clients.

McMahon is also affiliated with Nexus Technology Services, LLC (Nexutech), which supports the Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation (VIPC), ATA, LLC, the developer of the Flight Information Exchange, and The Hawthorn Group, an international public affairs firm based in Alexandria, Virginia. He previously served as the senior vice president of advocacy and government relations for AUVSI. Prior to that, he worked as the director of global communications and government affairs for Motorola Solutions.

“We are extremely fortunate to have Tom McMahon join the AUVSI Florida leadership team to spearhead our government relations strategy,” said Christopher Todd, President, AUVSI Florida. “The knowledge and skill that he brings to the table will prove essential towards serving the advocacy needs of our members across the State of Florida.”

For the past several years, Florida has been at the forefront of legislative action surrounding autonomous and uncrewed vehicle systems. Todd says McMahon’s previous experience working on behalf of AUVSI and other industry partners with Florida lawmakers should help AUVSI Florida play a stronger role surrounding future legislative action coming out of Tallahassee that could impact the uncrewed vehicle systems sector.

“Florida has a long and storied history surrounding aviation, transportation, and aerospace,” said McMahon. “I look forward to working with the leadership and members of AUVSI Florida, as well as other partners, stakeholders, and lawmakers, to positively impact the uncrewed vehicle systems industry and related sectors.”
